Dr. Mike McDermott PhD MA FAPI FRSA
Mike has over 40 years’ real estate valuation and valuation-related experience in the public and private sectors. For the last 30 years Mike has mainly worked along an arc beginning in southern Africa, going up to across Asia, and back down through southeast Asia and the Pacific to his home country, Australia. Along that arc Mike has consulted on land policy, legislation and administration matters in general, but especially upon facilitating fit-for-purpose land valuations in opaque markets. Mike’s master’s degree was on harnessing complexity and chaos sciences to creatively address complex and social issues, and his doctoral thesis was on addressing wicked valuation problems in the developing world.
His recent major works include “Wicked Valuations” (2018, Routledge), the UN-HABITAT/GLTN Policy Guide on the Valuation of Unregistered Land (2018, lead author), and the UN-HABITAT/GLTN Manual on the Valuation of Unregistered Land (2021, co-author). To this day he continues to consult and present at conferences worldwide, predominantly on the following three themes: addressing wicked problems, the valuation of unregistered lands, and due diligence standards of valuations for compensation for compulsory acquisitions.
