This webinar provides an overview of the LifeCycle Process commonly used by economic life experts to objectively estimate the economic life of property, plant, and equipment. The student will be exposed to the two life analysis techniques most commonly used by economic life analyst: Actuarial Analysis - (e.g. Iowa Survivor Curves) commonly used to quantify physical depreciation and ordinary obsolescence; and Technology Substitution Analysis - typically used to quantify the abnormal or excessive obsolescence brought about by rapid technological advancement, government mandates, evolving/changing consumer expectations, as well as many other obsolescence drivers we have seen in recent years.
Learning Outcomes
Upon webinar completion, the participant will be able to:
- Develop the LifeCycle curve(s) from an Iowa Survivor Curve;
- Develop the LifeCycle curve from a Technology Substitution Model;
- Combine two or more LifeCycle curves into a composite LifeCycle curve; and
- Develop the depreciation table from the LifeCycle curve(s) ― Develop the economic life for a class of property, ― Develop the remaining economic lives for each age of plant, ― Develop the percent good factors for each age of plant.

Mr. Barreca has conducted economic life analysis for over 35 years. He has developed and taught economic life development training for the last 25 years; and his firm publishes economic life and depreciation tables annually for over 15 years. Mr. Barreca is a long-standing member of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA), the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO), the Society of Depreciation Professionals (SDP), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and other professional organizations. He is a past president of the Alabama & Mississippi Chapter of the ASA, and past president of the SDP. Mr. Barreca is an Accredited Senior Appraiser (Retired) with the ASA, Certified Depreciation Professional with the SDP, and a licensed Professional Engineer.
