IAC22 RP - What's Your Slant? Bias in Appraising

Session Description

This one-hour session provides useful information for real property practitioners, interested in racial valuation bias. The session starts with a discussion of bias, what it is and is not. This leads into the history of redlining, deed restrictions, and building covenants, as well as the actors that orchestrated their creation and implementation. Next, we talk about how bias can seep into the appraisal process, and how you can mitigate it. This sessions rounds off with an overview of the Biden Administration’s Interagency Task Force on Property Appraisal and Valuation Equity (PAVE).
