Exam Description

To earn or retain the Master Gemologist Appraiser certification, GJ209 and GJ210 must be successfully completed at any time within the member's 5-year re-accreditation cycle.  GJ210 is a hands-on practical exam that consists of  the correct identification of loose and mounted stones including diamond and/or diamond simulants.  Diamond(s) are to be graded for color and clarity.  Students must provide or make arrangements for whatever gemological equipment they would like to have for the exam as well as diamond color grading master stones.  Please note, there are additional requirements beyond GJ209 and GJ210 in order to earn or hold the Master Gemologist Appraiser certification and successful completion of the course requirements does not automatically confer the MGA certification.

In order to receive credit for GJ210 all students must submit a 1 item Appraisal Report for review.  The intended use and subject property are up to the student but they should represent the student's best effort.  Reports should be submitted to the GJ Accreditation Specialist at ASA Headquarters or to the course instructor directly.  If an actual client's report is submitted, please redact all of the client's personally identifiable information or obtain a signed release from the client.  The reports will not be graded as "pass/fail"; they will simply be reviewed for conformity to USPAP and ASA GJ Report Writing Standards and constructive suggestions will be offered if appropriate or necessary.  Failure to submit an Appraisal Report in a timely manner will result in the student receiving NO CREDIT for GJ210 and therefore, they will not be eligible for certification or recertification credit for the Master Gemologist Appraiser certification.

Pre-Requisites

The GJ210 MGA Practical Exam is open to any current Master Gemologist Appraisers who will be recertifying their MGA anytime within the next 5 years, any current Accredited Senior Appraiser designated members who wish to earn the MGA certification, and any current Accredited Member or Candidate members who are simultaneously seeking their Accredited Senior Appraiser designation and MGA certification.  Please note that only currently designated Accredited Senior Appraisers may hold the Master Gemologist Appraiser certification.  Also note that there are gemological laboratory requirements to hold the MGA certification that are in addition to completion of GJ209 and GJ210.  More specific requirements are noted in the reaccreditation materials that must also be submitted.

Course Audience

Open to members seeking accreditation, reaccreditation, or advancement to MGA®.
