Pre-Requisites
The only prerequisite is some level of understanding of USPAP or IVS and a willingness to learn new concepts. If you have prior appraisal education, please understand that this course is unlikely to resemble anything you’ve been taught in the past.
For individuals seeking accreditation with ASA, it is strongly recommended that the GJ courses be taken in order starting with GJ201 because the 3 courses build upon each other. For students only seeking to expand their knowledge (i.e. not seeking ASA accreditation), the courses may be taken out of order, however, pre-approval is required for registration.
ASA members who have previously taken any of the combined Personal Property / Gems & Jewelry (PP/GJ) or Personal Property (PP) courses and wish to register for this course, should understand that the course and the material are completely different.
Please email education@appraisers.org so we may evaluate your request on a case-by-case basis.
Required Pre-Course Reading
Prior to the 1st day of class students are expected to have read and be ready to discuss the following sections in the USPAP 2024 Edition: Preamble, Definitions, Ethics Rule, Competency Rule, Scope of Work Rule, Record Keeping Rule, Standard 7 and Standard 8.
Students are required to have available during class the following texts/documents:
- ASA Personal Property Committee Monographs: # 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7; available via ASA's Shop

Course Description
This course will provide appraisers with an in-depth understanding and practical application of the essential principles, methodologies and vocabulary to develop and report an appraisal that concludes replacement value. This is most commonly used for the intended use of insurance scheduling. The precise meaning and application of USPAP Scope of Work Rule, USPAP Standard 7 and USPAP Standard 8 will form the basis for students to develop and report a gems and jewelry appraisal for insurance scheduling. Satisfactory completion of the Appraisal Report is an essential and required component of the course. Students will gain a thorough understanding of when and how to apply the primary approaches to valuation, how to recognize and rank relevant characteristics of specific types of property, practice core concepts of market research and data reconciliation, learn to write a concise narrative report and how to be in conformity with the required elements of a USPAP-compliant and ASA-compliant report. Conducting research, data analysis and reconciliation, and creating the different components of the report will be done as homework and discussed during in-class sessions. Instructor mentoring will be provided to ensure students understand the processes and are able to complete the final report prior to the deadline.
Important Information
The GJ202 class is presented via a virtual series format and taught live by highly qualified ASA designated instructor(s) over the course of two (2) weeks. It is intensive, extensive and fast-paced. Classes will meet virtually with the instructor(s) and engage in discussions, exercises, and post-sessions assignments. To receive credit for the course, students will create a complete Appraisal Report of specific items of jewelry to demonstrate their understanding of and competency in the material presented in class. To receive credit for GJ202 (40 credit hours) students must attend and participate in all classes, pass the final examination, and submit an acceptable insurance scheduling Appraisal Report within 30 days of the final exam date.
Instructional Methods
Materials will be presented utilizing lecture and visual aids with student understanding enhanced through group discussions of focused assignments that will be completed in-class and between sessions. The class will be highly interactive and students are encouraged to ask questions at any time. There are also pre-course reading requirements.
