Course Description

This course will introduce participants to the fundamental concepts and the basic knowledge needed to write an appraisal report. Among the topics covered are ethics, competency, three primary roles of an appraiser, three approaches to value, market types and layers, basic research concepts, recognizing jewelry manufacturing methods and their influence on the appraisal process, introduction to methods of data collection and analysis, and minimal reporting standards including an overview of the ASA Descriptive Elements for various types of jewelry. The course is based on the concepts engendered in the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) and the ASA appraisal standards taught in the Gems & Jewelry (GJ) Principles of Valuation series of courses. 

This is an introductory class and does not contain the same level of explanation and instruction students receive in the 120-hours of the ASA-GJ Principles of Valuation course series.

Instructional methods include class lecture with a corresponding slideshow, Q&A, links to further information, and the downloadable Student Manual.

Gemology students considering pursuing a career as a gems and jewelry valuer
Retail jewelers or their personnel who provide valuation services for their customers
Gemological laboratory personnel providing valuation services
Insurance professionals, auctioneers and attorneys seeking exposure to and a basic understanding of the requirements  for valuation of gems and jewelry

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain core appraisal concepts and the basic structure of a professional appraisal report in line with USPAP and ASA standards;
  • Describe essential ethical and competency requirements, including the primary roles of an appraiser; 
  • Compare the three approaches to value and apply suitable approaches based on market conditions; 
  • Identify major jewelry manufacturing methods and discuss how they affect identification, quality assessment, and valuation; and 
  • Apply basic research, data collection, and analysis techniques and meet minimal reporting standards, including key ASA Descriptive Elements for jewelry.

Accessing eMaterials

eMaterials are provided electronically in PDF format and posted to the class within the education dashboard for all registrants to securely access prior to the start of class. Attendees should come to the class prepared with an electronic or printed copy of all eMaterials to use as a refence during class. When opting to print downloadable materials, it is recommended that settings be adjusted to print in black and white (or grayscale) and consider printing double-sided on recycled paper.

Certificate of Completion

A certificate of completion will be accessible immediately post-class via your education dashboard. Participants are required to attend the live session and complete the remaining components under the Course Wrap-up tab to download a certificate of completion.

Lauren O'Sullivan Walter is an Accredited Senior Appraiser with ASA and has 20 years of professional experience in valuing jewelry.  She has been a GIA Graduate Gemologist since 2004, and is a Fellow of the Gemological Association of Great Britain Gem-A (FGA). She has worked in the diamond wholesale trade in NYC, buying, selling to the trade and exhibiting at world-renowned antique jewelry shows. She has held in-store appraisal clinics at name brand retail chain stores, and worked on large valuation projects for televised jewelry sales. She regularly attends jewelry and appraisal conferences and shows. Gemworld, NAJA, American Society of Appraisers, JCK, and AGTA.  And holds memberships with NAJA, Gem-A and ASA.
